So, to much fanfare, David Bowie released his first new album in years and years in 2013. The aptly titled, The Next Day, received widespread critical acclaim with many critics saying that not only was it a return to form for Bowie but simply one of his best albums ever. I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet (and I highly doubt it can be half as good as Low), but if one of the two lead-off singles, “The Stars Are Out Tonight,” is any indication, that hyperbole may be well deserved. It simultaneously has a classic 1980s David Bowie feel (the influence of say, The Smiths or The Cure on this song is huge) while also placing it firmly in the sphere of modern indie rock sonic ambition (though to be fair, all of those indie rock bands owe a huge thanks to Bowie’s work so maybe things are just coming full circle now). Anyways, it’s a fantastic song with a truly superb video. All Bowie fans owe it to themselves to check it out.
