In 2006’s polarizing Superman Returns (I’m one of the film’s more vocal defenders), Lois Lane wins a Pulitzer Prize during Superman’s absence from Earth for writing an article entitled “Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman.” The film makes it quite clear that, in fact, the world does need Superman, but in an age where Breaking Bad‘s Walter White is one of the most celebrated fictional characters of the last ten years, it raises an important question. Does the world still need fictional heroes? The short answer is yes, and we don’t have nearly enough of them.
